Launching Your Career OER

Launching Your Career is a second edition of the TRU Career Education Departments’ textbook From University to Career.  Work-integrated learning and Career Education is constantly evolving, and this new edition integrates key emerging trends and expands on critical topic to better prepare learners for meaningful careers.

This book is the result of a collaborative effort by a team of experts in experiential learning: Jamie Noakes, Cliff Robinson, Harshita Dhiman,Noah Arney, Shawn Read, Robline Davey, Tara Bond, Sarah Gibson, Brad Harasymchuk, Larry Iles, Kyra Garson, Amie McLean, Leanne Mihalicz and Jennifer Mei. With the support of the TRU OER Development Grant, the team conducted writing workshops, student focus groups, and peer reviews.

This book is organized into three sections:

  1. Discovery & Exploration  — Chapters 1 to 3 explore topics such as foundations of career theory, self-assessment, and labour market information.
  2. Reflection & Planning  — Chapters 4 and 5 cover career planning and goal setting as well as volunteering.
  3. Branding — Chapters 6 to 9 examine application documents, social shadow, job search strategies and interviews.
  4. Work-Integrated Learning — Chapters 10 to 16 addresses preparing for your first professional position, experience more access, cultural diversity & workplace barriers, intercultural communication in the workplace, indigenous inclusion in employment, TRC and employment and professional ethics in the workplace.

This open education resource contains interactive elements like H5P activities, videos, and practical exercises making it an essential tool for those seeking a successful transition to the professional world.
