A Guide for Successful Students
This resource was developed as part of the THRIVES project at St. Clair College to support first-semester students in their transition to college life, providing them with tools and strategies to achieve academic and personal success. Based on key skills, positive attitudes, and effective behaviours, this material covers topics such as setting goals, taking responsibility, maintaining physical and mental well-being, managing finances, and developing independent learning techniques.
The guide can be explored in its entirety or by selecting specific sections based on each student’s individual needs. For instance, new students might initially focus on the sections related to goals and responsibilities, and later incorporate time management, study skills, and overall well-being strategies as they progress in their college journey.
Adapted from College Success 2015 by the University of Minnesota and available under a Creative Commons license, this guide was created with the support of eCampus Ontario. The authors, Irene Stewart, a retention coordinator with extensive experience in learning strategies, and Aaron Maisonville, an instructional design technician with deep knowledge of tutoring and student success, have contributed their expertise to develop a practical and accessible resource to support students throughout their academic journey.
