From University to Career: Creating a Successful Transition

From University to Career is designed to guide students in their transition from university to the professional world, addressing every stage of career development, from self-assessment to workplace integration.

This book is the result of a collaborative effort by a team of experts in experiential learning: Brad Harasymchuk, Jamie Noakes, Jennifer Mei, Larry Iles, Leanne Mihalicz, Mitch Clingo, Noah Arney, Robline Davey, Sarah Gibson, Sarah Ladd, and Tara Bond. With the support of the TRU OER Development Grant, the team conducted writing workshops, student focus groups, and peer reviews. Despite challenges like the pandemic, we successfully aligned our goals and refined this educational resource.

This book is organized into three sections:

  1. Understanding Yourself and the Job Market — Chapters 1 to 4 explore topics such as self-assessment, labor market trends, career planning, and experiential learning.
  2. Tools for Securing Employment — Chapters 5 to 9 cover strategies for creating application documents, social media branding, job searching, interview preparation, and standing out in your first job.
  3. Key Topics for Entry-Level Professionals — Chapters 10 and 11 address workplace accessibility and Indigenous perspectives on diversity and professional ethics.
